THE HIKE:
Stratton Open Space gets overlooked. It sits at the foot of Cheyenne Canyon, and most adventurers just drive right by. But it’s a great place to get in an afternoon hike. There are two reservoirs, plenty of wildlife, and an arresting view of Cheyenne Mountain.
THE ROUTE:
Stratton Open Space has a maze of trails. You can hike about as long, or short, as you want.
One I recommend is the Upper Meadows Loop. It’s 1.73 miles of mild trail-- perfect for walking your dog or talking with a friend.
Follow the signs and you’ll loop around South Suburban Reservoir. The views from the top are outstanding. Once at the reservoir, you’ll see Cheyenne Mountain showing off its reflection.
GOOD TO KNOW:
-If you decide to hike the Upper Meadows Loop, it’s easiest to go counter-clockwise.
-All the trails in Stratton Open Space are exceptionally well-maintained. However, there’s a bunch of them. So if it’s your first time, you might find this place a little confusing.
-South Suburban Reservoir is clear and clean. But it’s Colorado Springs drinking water; so no swimming. But your dog can swim. Huh...
